Ever since the blackout of 2003 started yesterday people have been searching for an answer as to why it happened. Most will probably be satisified with a simple answer along the lines of a techincal failure in Cleveland.
The real reason goes a lot deeper however. Even though both pResident Bush and New York State Governor George Pataki have mentioned ill maintained electrical grids as possible reasons for the blackout, the chances of them doing something about it are slim as they are both profiting immensly from not watching closely over the power companies. Both politicians recieved huge compaign domations from power companies in exchange for favoring deregulation. And that is the reason why the lights went out, as Greg Palast’s new article accurately points out. When rules are relaxed prices are inflated and maintenance costs scrapped.
And there you have it, another reason to get rid of Bush and his cronies. One can only hope that the 50 million or so people who were affected by the blackout will care.
