What if Saddam got a real trial?

In his new article Joe Conason over at Working For Change asks the question of what might happen if Saddam Hussein was allowed to defend himself in a proper trial (vs a military tribunal or Ashcroft style court proceedings).

The picture of Hussein putting US officials to shame drawn in the article to me suggests that it’s very unlikely that Saddam will recieve a fair trial as such a move could threaten Bush’s chances of being elected in ’04 a great deal.
