More defense of Ann Coulter

After my last letter was published, a few readers decided to respond and unnecessarily attack my arguments and put words in my mouth. So here is my response in full:

To the editor:

Two letters to the editor regarding Ann Coulter directly addressed my recent letter and I would therefore like to briefly respond to the two readers.

Kat McDonald asks if “it (would) be so hard for us to just stop trying to insult each other’s intelligence and start realizing we’re all human beings?”, thereby proving that she is one of the hopeless college liberals. She may have not realized that in the real world being nice will only get you so far. If President Bush was of her opinion, the Taliban would still be ruling Afghanistan and national security could be an even greater concern. If people of her kind had enough intelligence to speak of, then I suppose we could attempt a well reasoned and calm debate, but seeing as that is not so, it is times like this that require the bold and courageous to be blunt and tell it like it is.

Also, Ann Coulter’s statement regarding the Democrats should not count as slander as it is the truth as some conservatives see it. To some people, abortion is killing, lying is ok to save your marriage, lying and adultery are ok even for the ruler of the free world, some taxes are thievery and I think many Democrats have more than male genitalia envy of Republicans than the most avid consumers of Viagra.

Another letter writer, Mr. Whalen, must have not read my letter or be so liberal that his mind disallowed my words entry. He writes that he “can’t fathom how anyone could have the audacity to suggest torturing our own countrymen and supporting dictatorial rule could be interpreted as “dry humor.”". Nowhere has Ann Coulter suggested anything like this. I think Ann Coulter was a bit too young to lead a revolution in the late 1950s, Mr Whalen.

It may also interest Mr. Whalen that Ann Coulter elaborated on her comments on CBC in a recent interview on C-span. She said that those Canadians signed up with American troops and that she talked to the CBC host for a good three hours and not just for the length of the segment that aired.

I would normally not reward hapless radicals like Mr. Whalen with a response, but in the interest of giving the conservative and centrist minority at UB a well reasoned voice, I felt compelled to respond.
